Q The Assignment: After reading through Richard Rodriguez's "The Achievement of Desire," address ONE of the three prompts below as the subject of your initial post: ? 1. Rodriguez opens his epistle with a flashback. From there, as the piece progresses, nostalgia becomes a key metaphor for the delivery of his argument. Comment a bit, then, on the idea of nostalgia laced throughout Rodriguez's chapter excerpt. ? 2. The author writes much of the "scholarship boy" throughout the article. Consider what the term means, and decide whether his position regarding the scholarship boy is contrary, or in support. ? 3. The Rodriguez excerpt closes in the final paragraph with a reference to "aristocratic pastoral literature." After a quick online search, consider the Rodriguez chapter and decide how the very article Rodriguez writes fits the definition. The 411: 1. The deadline for your initial post (150 words) and reply post (100 words) comes soon. So remain diligent. 2. The points for this assignment will go into the "pre-writing assignments" column, so they carry a significant weight. Partial posts, or posts not meeting the word count, will guarantee you, at most, only partial credit. Other: Continue to keep it classy, ladies and gentleman. As a group, you were impressive with the first discussion board round: cogent thoughts, well-explained commentary, and no text-scribble as far as the proverbial eye could see. So keep it up. Good things come to those who write "good" . . . er . . . write "well." Peace.

Richard Rodriguez uses nostalgia differently throughout "Achievement of Desire". In the beginning nostalgia is used as a way to show simpler times. In the first chapters he is embarrassed of his parents even though he does not outright say it. His Parents weren't schooled, and he feels like they are inferior to him or his peers academically. Nostalgia is spending time with his family and doing things that might seem simple to him. As the chapters go on nostalgia becomes something that brings him pain of having to hide his education desires to his parents. Richard Rodriguez even hides his awards from his family who cannot speak English that well, almost as if he does not want them to embarrass him Infront of his classmates. Later on, nostalgia becomes a feeling of wonder and bliss.
